Kerala, 10 ഡിസംബര് (H.S.)
Delhi: Due to the strong opposition within the Congress party to
Shashi Tharoor will not be accepting the
Veer Savarkar Award. In the meantime, amidst the intensifying criticism from
the Congress party, Tharoor's office later announced that he would not be
attending the event. His office clarified that he would instead be traveling to
Kolkata to participate in another program. Media personnel who arrived at his
residence for a reaction were unable to get a direct response from Tharoor; his
office subsequently communicated his position.
On being
named as one of the six recipients of Veer Savarkar International Impact Award
2025, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said, I am not getting anything. I just
heard about it yesterday and I am not going.
The
party's position is that he decided to accept the award without consulting the
party. However, the organizers, HRDS India, had responded that Tharoor had
confirmed his attendance for the award ceremony, where Rajnath Singh was
scheduled to present the awards.

In a
letter addressed to the Thiruvananthapuram MP, HRDS India said the award
recognises individuals and institutions whose work reflects the ideals
associated with Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, including “nationalism,
self-reliance, moral courage, and social transformation.” The NGO described the
award as a tribute to Savarkar’s life, especially his sacrifices during
imprisonment at the Cellular Jail and his contributions to India’s freedom
struggle.
Each
awardee is to receive ₹1,00,000, along with a certificate and memento.
The
invitation highlighted Tharoor’s long career in public life, including his
nearly three decades at the United Nations, where he rose to the rank of
Under-Secretary-General and later contested for the role of Secretary-General
in 2006. It also praised his parliamentary work and his contributions

Rajmohan Unnithan's Reaction
Rajmohan
Unnithan responded that he still believes Tharoor will not accept the award.
If
the blood of Congress remains in Shashi Tharoor's veins, he must refuse the
award, he stated. Unnithan identified HRDS India as an organization
linked to the RSS and mentioned that it is associated with many controversies
and complaints. He urged Tharoor to strongly speak out against the award.
Unnithan added that Tharoor must clarify whether he was informed about the award.
There
is no doubt that if Tharoor accepts the award, he will be permanently ousted
from the hearts of Congress members, he warned. He described it as a
deliberate move by the BJP and RSS to make Shashi Tharoor lose the
position he still retains among Congress workers. Unnithan cautioned
Tharoor not to fall into this trap and said the AICC would decide what action
to take if the award is accepted. He further commented that Narendra Modi is
attempting to create a 'Congress-mukt Bharat' (Congress-free India), and no one
with Congress blood flowing through their veins should do anything to
accelerate that effort.
A.P. Anil Kumar's Comments
KPCC
Working President A.P. Anil Kumar MLA said Tharoor should decide for himself
whether to accept the award. He stated that since Shashi Tharoor is a Working
Committee member, the AICC is the body that should take a stand.
