Kottayam, 24 Jan (H.S.):Palakkad MLA Rahul Mankootathil will continue to remain in judicial custody after the Thiruvalla Judicial First Class Magistrate Court extended his remand in connection with a third rape case registered against him.
The court passed the order after considering a request submitted by the Special Investigation Team (SIT), which is probing the case. The SIT informed the court that further custodial time was required as the investigation is still at a crucial stage. Accepting this submission, the magistrate ordered an extension of the remand period.
This is the third rape case registered against the legislator, significantly intensifying the seriousness of the allegations and drawing widespread public and political attention. Investigators are currently questioning multiple witnesses and examining electronic as well as documentary evidence as part of the ongoing probe.
Rahul Mankootathil is presently lodged at the Mavelikkara Special Sub Jail, where he has been in judicial custody following his arrest. Prison authorities confirmed that he continues to remain in custody under standard security arrangements and is being produced before the courts as required.
Meanwhile, the legal proceedings related to his bail application have reached a decisive stage. Arguments from both the defence and the prosecution have already been completed. The defence has argued that the relationship in question was consensual and has termed the allegations as false and motivated. On the other hand, the prosecution has strongly opposed the grant of bail, citing the gravity of the charges and the existence of multiple similar cases against the accused.
The court has reserved its order on the bail plea and is scheduled to pronounce its verdict next Wednesday. Legal observers note that the decision on bail is expected to have a significant impact on the future course of the investigation.
The case has sparked intense debate across Kerala’s political landscape, with opposition parties demanding strict legal action and accountability, while supporters of the legislator have called for due process and restraint.
As the investigation continues and the bail verdict approaches, public attention remains firmly focused on the judiciary’s next move in a case that has raised serious questions about justice, accountability, and the rule of law.
